Description
We found this large and heavy black chawan (teabowl) at the studio of Iga potter Takashi Tanimoto. The form recalls Edo-era Setoguro chawan, and thus it has both an ancient —as well as modern—atmosphere. We love the matte black ash glaze, which contrasts with the buff-colored Iga clay that peeks out along the rim and in a few spots. This is a chawan for someone with large hands. It is heavy and has a few spots that have a rough texture. It is a very masculine bowl.
