With winter on its way, we are pleased to bring to you this beautiful large white Shino serving plate. Square in form, with squared-off corners and an atmospheric rendering of matsu (Japanese pine trees) that appear subtly from underneath the thick white glaze — like pine trees seen through snow or mist. The corners and low spots — where the glaze is thin and the iron oxide has stained the clay a deep red — show hi-iro (fire color), a highly desirable effect coveted by tea masters. To the modern eye, these bright red accents simply provide a colorful contrast. The delicately sculpted feet raise the plate elegantly off the plane of the table. We think this is from the Showa era.
This lovely serving plate can be used as a display item when not in use for food. The original box (damaged) is included.
