Otagaki Rengetsu tall candlestick vase

Otagaki Rengetsu tall candlestick vase $1,200

Elegant, tall candlestick-shaped vase inscribed with a waka (poem) by Otagaki Rengetsu (1791-1875). Rengetsu (meaning Lotus moon, her Buddhist name) was a Buddhist nun and a talented poet, potter and calligrapher. She is regarded as one of the finest poets of the 19th century, (famous even during her time) and known mainly for her waka, which she penned in her inimitable wispy style (like blades of grass) on paper and pottery, which she sold to make her living.

Rengetsu was a prolific poetess, and due to her fame and kind nature, was known to help young painters and potters by adding her poems to their work. We believe this is one such example because the pottery is not of her style.

This statuesque vase has a soft glaze and looks wonderful alone, but even better with a modern ikebana arrangement. There is no box.
